June 2006 Meeting Minutes
Chief Petty Officers Association of Miami, Inc.
Thursday, June 1, 2006
Meeting called to order 1951. Pledge and moment of silence. Pat Bowden
had update from Iraq.

Minutes from the Previous Meeting. Motion to accept April minutes as posted. There
was no meeting in May. Duly seconded and approved. Reminder - minutes of all meeting will
be posted on our website (http://www.pes1.com/cpoa/).
Treasurers Report: Savings balance $2,161.28. Checking balance $5,255.66. 4
outstanding checks leaving actual balance of $3,480.29. $60 in petty cash from sales of
coins. Motion to accept report as read. Duly seconded and approved.
Committees
- Race Next race November 17th 19th. There is an
event June 24th at Bicentennial Park. Chief Short unavailable for detailed
report.
- Scholarship
Chief Powell submitted proposed wording to be added to our bylaws
for scholarship recipients. " The CPOA Scholarship fund will be available to any
current member of the association or the members immediate family to include sons,
daughters, step-children, spouse, married childrens spouses, and grandchildren. The
purpose of this scholarship is to assist the candidate in obtaining his or her
undergraduate degree." Discussion that we should include graduate degrees and other
training. Have received no submissions. Tabled until next meeting.
- Philanthropy
NTR. On hold pending budget review.
- Ship Liaison
The strike group (USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, USS Klakring and USS
Newport News) arrived April 24th. We had a reception at Café Blue Fish and
were presented plaques. In addition, the Chiefs Mess of the Eisenhower presented
Patricia Bowden with a signed picture since this was Pats first ship and he is in
Iraq. Fleet Week was the 1st week in May. Ships included the USS Oscar Austin,
USS San Jacinto, USS Shreveport, USS San Antonio , USS Hampton, USCGC Elm, HMCS Preserver
(Canadian oiler/replenishment ship) HMCS Halifax ( Canadian frigate). We had the Sunrise
Lane pub crawl reception and were presented several pictures and plaques. The USS
McInerney arrived for Memorial Day. We had a reception for them at McSorleys Irish
Pub.
- Navy League
Next dinner meeting June 8th.
- 501(3)(c)
It is critical that we complete this process or we will need to pay
15% income tax. Ron Roy will review the Navy League budget layout.
- Initiation
Training will be every Friday. Ron Roy had a handout showing new
format.

New Business
- Pat Bowden had information on 2 potential places for Holiday Party. Still have chance to
go to Grand palms.
- Motion to approve reception for USS McInerney, not to exceed $300. Duly seconded and
approved.
Good of the Order
- Chief Bob White is in hospital with fractured vertebrae.
- Chief Lesser spoke about Memorial Day service. Very moving and we need to remember those
who are no longer with us. Also gave information on Tricae and VA.
- Chief Tedlow member of Florida CPOA. Senior Chief Roy will post information on the
website.
