Treasurers report: $7,751.77 in checking, $2,025.07 savings, $255.00 to be deposited, total $10,031.84. All checks have been cashed. No outstanding bills. Noted that race income (about $3,400) has not been received. Motion to accept treasurers report. Passed.
Committee Reports:
Bylaws: Bob White will be scheduling next meeting. Copies of old bylaws made available to all present. Everyone is encouraged to send their comments to the committee.
Philanthropy: We received a donation of 15 new giant Macys Mickey Mouse stuffed toys from the Chiefs Mess of the USS Bulkeley. Angel Ruizs wife was able to locate the Family Resource Center for Children (this is for children under the age of 12 who have been removed from their homes due to the death of parents or abuse) which has 15 children who will be able to enjoy these toys. Angel will coordinate the giving along with some photos and a note to the USS Bulkeley. Special thanks to Angel and his wife for finding a home for these.
Ship Liaison: Al Starr reported on the successful receptions we had for the USS Bulkely and USS Mitscher last month. He also spoke about the upcoming Fleet Week and Air&Sea Show (scheduled events attached). We will host the Chiefs Mess from each of the boats in port on April 30, 2002 at 1900 at Brownies on Andrews Avenue. List includes: USCGC Tahoma (Wmec 908) - Coast Guard Cutter, USS Harry S. Truman - Aircraft Carrier (CVN 75), USS San Jacinto (CG 56), USS McFaul (DDG 74), USS Stout (DDG 50), USS Deyo (DD 989), USS Porter (DD 59). Representatives from the USS Portland (LSD 37) may also be in town at that time. Uniform of the day will be CPOA shirts with name tags so the visiting chiefs will know who is hosting this reception. This is not a Navy League function. Motion to budget $600 for evening at Brownies (beer and food). Discussion. This is taking care of our own. Motion passed. Plaques will need to be made for the visiting ships. Motion to spend up to $350 for plaques. Passed. Motion to have discretionary $300 for executive board to spend at Brownies if needed. Discussion. Ayes 7; Nays 4; passed. Point of Order. Reading of current bylaws explaining only $50 should be available to executive board for discretionary spending. Discussion about whether this last motion was illegal. Cannot pass motion overriding bylaws. Therefore, President overturned motion. Further discussion about Air & Sea Show. Possible to have the advance group from the USS Portland at our reception at Brownies and a chance for riders on the Portland during the show. They will be anchored off Fort Lauderdale Beach for the entire show so this would mean staying on board (hot racking discussed). Port will be closed during Fleet Week, no ship tours to public. Those with Military ID might be admitted. Motion to extend another $300 for party if there is a need to be determined by the officers present at the function. Ayes 7, Nays 4; Passed.
Scholarship: Application period ends June 30th. Application must be from a member or their immediate family. Application package should contain letter requesting a scholarship, a resume, a recent transcript from an accredited institution/school. If necessary, the applicant might be asked to appear before the Scholarship Committee. Applicants can re-apply if they have previously applied for this $1,000 scholarship. Discussion about how to best disseminate this information.
Races: Bagley noted huge success this past weekend. Took in over $36,044 across the counter, net $33,881.36. Our income $3,800 less expenses for net about $3,100. Had 9 no-shows of 32 who committed to working the race. Discussion about serious need to follow through when making these committments. If sickness or work precludes your being able to honor your commitment, need to contact race committee coordinators as quickly as possible. Had many non-CPOA folks supporting us. Reve suggested inviting them to our holiday party. Hererra mentioned few actual drilling reservists participate. Powell spoke about the many people who worked with no relief because of the no-shows. There were many strong feelings vented during the ensuing discussion. Although there may be a race in April, we are not committed to another until November. Kudos and Bravo Zulu to everyone who did participate. Motion by Ira to invite non-CPOA members who helped to Sea Escape cruise before June. Suggestion to discuss further next month. Motion tabled.
