CPOA Meeting 02/07/02

Meeting called to order 1930. Pledge and moment of silence.

Opening remarks from new President. Intends to start meetings on time. Will try for more disciplined and structured meetings in order to finish more quickly and allow for social time. Asked for guests – none presented. Requested muster be included in minutes.

Last month’s minutes: Read by Ernie Pratt (in lieu of winning 50/50 again). Corrections made to spelling of new president’s name. Motion to accept minutes as amended. Passed.

Treasurer’s report: Paidup members now total 21. $9,084.63 in checking account, $2,025.07 in savings, for total of $11,109.70. $151 cash on hand. Collected $205. $11,465.70 current total. $123 outstanding checks. Savings earned $178 this year. No outstanding bills. Motion to accept Treasurer’s report. Passed.

Committee Reports:

Race: Lee Palfrey reported. Race dates for next race have changed to Thursday-Friday-Saturday, not Friday-Saturday-Sunday as reported last month. Will be February 28th, March 1st and 2nd. Increased Security requires Social Security number and Drivers License number in order to work the race. Paul is collecting the information. Questions about what track will do with this privileged information. Discussion. Only opening 6 tents. Need 12 people on Thursday, 20 on Friday, and 25-28 on Saturday. This is only a limited number of tents for the number of people who will be attending (18,000 tickets already sold). Lee’s cell phone 954-592-6329. Pauls’s cell phone 954-325-1096. Budget/Finance: President informed he needs to appoint.

Philanthropy: Norm Powell looking into needs of Children’s Cancer Society and Children’ Burn Center. Discussion about our status as non-profit organization which prohibits us from contributing to candidates’ election funds.

Ship Liaison: Al Starr reported Secretary of Navy will be here February 16th. Navy League hosting President’s Ball in his honor. Ship visits include USS Bulkeley DDG-84 which was commissioned in New York in December 2001 will be in port February 25th – March 1st. Command Master Chief has indicated he will be pleased to hoist a few with us. Reception planned for Freddie’s Anchor Bar February 27th. USCGC Campbell (WMEC909) will be in port February 12th -14th. This is a 270’ home ported in New Bedford, MA. Navy League planning a reception February 12th at Freddie’s Anchor Bar. USS Mitscher (DDG-57) scheduled to be in port March 4th – 7th. Fleet Weekk is planned to begin April 29th. May 2nd – 3rd Air & Sea Show. We can participate as before with reception that Wednesday. USS Truman will be here for that. Good opportunity for rides.

Scholarship: No report.

Old Business

bulletBob White provided copy of Constitution and Bylaws. Read selected portions (see attached). Suggested that we are not doing as originally written and should change to reflect what we actually do. Motion to form committee to review our bylaws and offer proposals to update. Volunteers include Paul LaCoursiere, Mike Short, Norm Powell, and Stan Lesser. Discussion. Feeling seems to be that we have expanded our vision beyond what was originally written. Membership has been supportive of these changes. Revisions and updates will be suggested by this committee. Motion passed. Committee requesting suggestions for revisions and updates before April 1st .

New Business

bulletMotion to host reception for Chiefs’ Mess of USS Bulkeley at Freddie’s Anchor Bar on February 27th at 1900, cost not to exceed $300. Uniform of the Day CPOA shirts and khaki pants. Passed.
bulletMotion to reimburse Patricia Bowden for $200 for costs incurred with party. Passed.
bulletMotion to purchase plaque for USS Bulkeley, $67. Passed.
bulletBob White brought up that chiefs are being escorted by Marine guards at the Reserve Center. Question about policy and security there.
bulletBalcom won 50/50.
