November 2004 Meeting Minutes
Chief Petty Officers Association of Miami, Inc.
Thursday, November 4, 2004
Meeting called to order 1930. Pledge and moment of silence. Welcome back to Nigel
Brown. Ken Larson was married last month. Special thanks to Chief Tedlow who took minutes
last month.

Minutes from the Previous Meeting. Chief Lippincott noted that he was indeed
present. Motion to accept as corrected. Duly seconded and approved.
Treasurers Report: Checking $9,967.47, Savings $2,117.98. Presented by Chief
Lesser in Chief Herreras absence. Motion to accept. Duly seconded and approved.
Committees
- Race Will need at least 20 people Friday, 30 people on Saturday and Sunday.
Chief Short needs the names with DOB and SS or DL# immediately. Chief Powell has the
rooms. Motion to spend $500 to take care of expenses. Since this is already in the budget,
motion was withdrawn. Everyone is encouraged to contact everyone they know to
participate in the race since this is our biggest fundraiser of the year. Dates are
November 19-21.
- Scholarship
Master Chief LaCoursiere will forward mailing address of
recipient to Chief Herrera.
- Philanthropy
Chief Rodriguez, Chief Powell, and Chief Lippincott attended a
memorial for Edna Sardella at the Armed Forces Service Center October 10th.
Keith Whitbeck will be invited to the Holiday Party. Master Chief Fagenbaum brought up a
Habitat for Humanity that will be in Hollywood January 2005. Since the Leyte Gulf will be
here that month, may have some volunteers from them.
- Ship Liaison
Senior Chief Starr noted USS Leyte Gulf coming in January. Vella
Gulf was here in October. Had good turnout of their mess at our reception. Discussed their
changes in initiation. USCG lost BM1 from Fort Lauderdale station. Vella Gulf left early
so they were able to man the rails to pay their respects during the petty officers
memorial. Vella Gulf gave us a plaque and ships insignia. LPH Iwo Jima will be here
the week of December 6th to participate in Pearl Harbor ceremonies. December 9th
is open for us to host a reception. Senior Chief Starr will try to arrange a tour.
Reminder of the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Leyte Gulf ceremonies which
will be held November 10th and 11th.

Financial statements have been sent to the CPA and tax number has
been applied for.
Old Business
- Nominations for 2005 officers Last months nominees were Norm Powell for
President, Rick Tedlow and Ira Paul for Vice-President, Gayle Malone-Neary for Secretary,
and Jorge Herrera for Treasurer. Nominations were again opened and no further names were
suggested. Motion for the secretary to record unanimous vote for Treasurer. Duly seconded
and passed. Congratulations to Jorge Herrera. Motion for the secretary to record unanimous
vote for Secretary. Duly seconded and passed. Congratulations to Gayle Malone-Neary. Vote
was held for Vice-President. Congratulations to Rick Tedlow. Motion for the secretary to
record unanimous vote for President. Duly seconded and passed. Congratulations to Norm
Powell.
New Business
- Thanksgiving gift certificates Motion to support needy sailors with $50 gift
certificates to Publix. Senior Chief Schwartz will identify 2 sailors from Reserve Center.
Gift certificates will also be given to the Fort Lauderdale Coast Guard Station and Cutter
Gannet. Duly seconded and passed.
- Holiday Dinner
Reminder that this will be December 2nd at Grand
Palms Country Club. Uniform is Summer Whites or appropriate Civilian attire. Cocktails at
1800 (cash bar), brief meeting at 1830, dinner at 1900. Choice of entrees. Call
Chief Lesser, Chief Short, or Chief Powell to make reservations.
